Navigating the First Trimester: A Real Look at the Early Weeks of Pregnancy
The first trimester of pregnancy can feel like both a quiet beginning and an overwhelming shift. For many, it’s the part of the journey that’s hardest to talk about—because so much is happening behind the scenes, and yet everything still feels uncertain.
At Worcester Community Midwifery, we know the early stages of pregnancy are about more than just physical symptoms. The first trimester is also about emotions, identity, and the often-messy process of adjusting to a new reality. Whether this pregnancy was long-awaited, unexpected, or somewhere in between, the first trimester is full of unknowns. And you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Weeks 5–9: The Inside Story
By the time most people learn they’re pregnant, they’re already well into the first trimester—around week 5. That’s when the hormones kick in. Your body starts producing hCG while other horomones increase to support early development. You may feel more tired, more sensitive, or more nauseated. Or you might feel… totally normal.
Meanwhile, your baby is doing the most in secret. In just a few weeks, they grow from the size of a tiny orange seed to a plump green olive. Major systems like the brain, spinal cord, and heart are forming. Arms and legs are budding. It’s small but mighty work—and your body is working hard to keep up.
What You Can Do Now
The first trimester can feel like a blur of Google searches and second-guessing. But there are a few simple steps you can take to support your body and peace of mind as things begin to change.
- Start prenatal vitamins (if you haven’t already)
- Hydrate and rest when your body asks for it
- Avoid all high-risk substances
- Choose a care provider who will listen, support, and guide
- Focus on optimizing a nutricious diet to support your changing body
